The UK detained Glen Greenwald's partner (under the terrorism act: no explanation, no lawyer) while in transit through London to ask him about the NSA revelations.
Disgraceful.

Same issue of the Graun: Will Self reported as a possible paedophile whilst on a walking holiday with his son. Also, Oswestry wants to allow a housing development right at the foot of the Iron Age Hill Fort. The country’s gone swivel-eyed, brass-buttoned/blue-blazered/tufty-‘tache mad.

It does appear that he was carrying documents for Greenwald, but does that mean the UK has declared Snowden’s whistle blowing as aiding terrorists?

Presumably this is the international version of stop-and-search, and the gay left wing journalist with a clear involvement in reporting Snowden is a “likely suspect”. A bit like driving whilst black. I’m in two minds abt Snowden, personally, but then I knew the NSA was listening in since I was a child, so the shock-horror-omg reaction was barred to me…

Katherine, the shock for me was that the checks and balances the surveillance requires have been so weakened as to be non-existent.
Subsequent to that, the extraordinary attitude of politicians to this has also been a shock.

Tom, yes about the checks and balances; but I was cynical about them, too, choosing to believe that for the most part about 80% of the time they operated appropriately and that was as good as we could expect, given the innate arrogance of power and our own general refusal as a population to be politically involved enough to have better politicians.

Hi Tom – tried to access your blog, but getting the following error
‘Fetching of original content failed with the following error: Proxy Publisher Failure – CONNECTION ERROR. If you own this domain, please consult this FAQ.’ Any ideas? There is a link to here https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/service/faq?csw=1#publisherfailure , does that help?

Odd, that’s a Google service I use to speed up page loading. The blog works fine for me from here and over VPN to the UK and US, so maybe try again?

Disgraceful story indeed, how did this ludicrous piece of legislation get through? No access to a lawyer, and no right to silence, so if you refuse to answer questions, they can do you for that! And confiscating his possessions! Police state here we come….
